Club news - 7th Oct

Posted by Spencer Park Admin on Sunday, 11 October 2015

The beginning of the surf season is just around the corner.  REGISTRATION DAY is being held on Sunday 18 October from 10am at the Surf Club.  It is a great chance to catch up with old friends have a chat and meet some new friends.  We will have the BBQ on and some drinks available.  Bring a wetsuit, you never know it may be tropical enough for a bit of a splash.  Sorry no promises on the weather but can guarantee a warm welcome.  For those of you who can't make it on the 18th  the link to be do your registration is below.

Payment can be made online and the details are on the website here.

We receive our funding from Surf Life Saving New Zealand based on the number of members we have so everyone's registration is VERY important to the club.

To make sure the club is spick and span before registration there is a WORKING BEE at the club Sunday 11 October (this Sunday) from 10am.  It is not  envisioned it will take no more than a couple of hours with "all hands to the pump".  If you are able to bring some tools with you that would be fantastic (broom, wheel barrow, shovel, rags etc)  If you have a power washer (or water blaster) you could share please let Nicki know.  The other 'tool' we need is a long reach broom or window washer.  Again if you have one please let Nicki know.  My number is 027 626 0990, flick me a text or email me on surfsports@spencerpark.co.nz and let me know if you are able to help out and what tools you can bring.  Whole families are welcome, everyone can be found a job.

Lifesaving Update

We are now really starting to wind up for the start of the season. I've tried to contact every lifeguard to see whether they are returning for patrol this season. If I have accidentally not contacted you, then feel free to get in touch (lifeguarding@spencerpark.co.nz or 021 0575 685). I'm currently working on the patrol roster and patrol dates, so stay tuned for further information. Please read below for an update on lifesaving opportunities/news:

There have been two instances over the past fortnight where lowlifes have tried to break-in to our clubhouse, and a case of a gate being left unlocked. I ask that anyone accessing the club take extra care to set the alarm, check that the club is entirely locked up and all gates are locked. If you see any damage to the club or gates, or see/hear anything suspicious, please contact myself (lifeguarding@spencerpark.co.nz or 021 0575 685) ASAP.

The club committee has once again offered to provide a subsidy of 50% to anyone who attends a First Aid Course/Refresher this season.

First Aid Refreshers

A number of our lifeguards are required to sit their refresher for First Aid Level 1 (same as Comprehensive Workplace First Aid, NZQA credits 6400, 6401 & 6402) this year. This has to be done every two years, otherwise you need to complete the course in full again. If you would like to sit a refresher, then see here to book onto a public course (SLSNZ are not running refreshers): http://www.cityfirstaid.co.nz/coursedates.htm

First Aid Courses

First Aid Level 1 dates: 17/18 October + 28/29 November
First Aid Level 2 dates: 7 Nov + 8 Nov
Contact Chris Parker for further enquires.

Introduction to Surf Coaching

For those parents who have indicated they are interested in being part of the coaching team this season I thoroughly recommend you attend this course.  And to anyone else who would like to upskill in coaching.  There is no entry requirement to attend.
As it is now being run on Saturday 17th October it no longer clashes with our Registration day.
You will gain some good tips and pointers to lead you into the up-coming surf season.  It's not an onerous day and I do recommend you complete it. (Every one passes)
As this is short notice of the change of date, can you please contact Nicki by Friday 9th to confirm you attendance.
Email surfsports@spencerpark.co.nz
Phone/text 027 626 0990
I will be phoning as many as I can to encourage you to go.  If you can make my phone list shorter that would be fantastic.
Details of what the course will cover are below.
Start time and location are to be confirmed and I will let you know as soon as I have details
